Seahawks Name Jim Mora as Next Head Coach
Jim Mora will succeed Mike Holmgren as Seattle Seahawks head coach beginning with the 2009 season, the team announced today. After serving as the assistant head coach and defensive backs coach for one more season, the 46-year-old Mora will begin a new, four-year contract as the head coach. Holmgren pushed for the announcement now, so players who are poised to enter free agency in March can judge Seattle while knowing who its coach will be beyond next season. Holmgren announced earlier he would fulfill the final year of his contract and then leave the organization. The former Atlanta coach took the Falcons to the NFC Championship in 2004, his first season in Atlanta. Comments from Seahawks fans on the announcement: From chawkbob: "I think Mora saw Seattle as an opportunity not only to get back to his coaching roots (as a position coach) and "recharge his batteries" after the drain of the Atalanta situation (that being a coaching position in which the owner is more married to the QB than anybody else in the organization, including coaching staff and front office), but also as an opportunity to get back to head coaching within 5 years." From Moeflo8: "That's a relief. I knew that's why he pulled his name out of consideration for the head coach position with the Redskins. He's done wonders with our secondary, and he's a great fit. Let's just hope this season the guys can win a Super Bpwl with Holmy, so he can leave in style." From iverson2169: "There should be plenty of continuity in going forward the way they have (naming him immediately so that that chemistry starts to build now). Also, this could have dramatic impact on the long-term decisions of several key free agents. Mora has always been a players coach, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Seattle's free agent signing prowess actually increase from this move." |
