3rd Annual Mt. Rainier Climb - Quest for the Summit 2009
| The Seattle Seahawks
are proud supporters of Camp Patriot and its activities supporting
members of the U.S. military wounded in action. Beginning July 7th
and for the next three days, a climbing team that includes three wounded
veterans will scale Mt. Rainier. Those veterans are: SFC Mario Barragan,
1st Lieutenant Reinaldo Gonzalez, and SFC Jesse Yandell. Camp Patriot’s programs renew the dreams of disabled American veterans by offering outdoor adventures of their choosing. Camp Patriot creates experiences and relationships through outdoor challenges that renew the spirit of accomplishment that led these brave men and women to military service in the first place. It all began on July 5th with a kick off dinner at Qwest Field. The fundraiser included guest speaker Ed Viesturs, recently back from his 7th successful summit of Mt. Everest. On July 6th the climbing team traveled to the town of Ashford, WA, at the base of Mt. Rainier. There the team organized and packed all the climbing gear, food, and supplies necessary for the three days on the 14,411 ft. peak. On July 7th, the team hiked up the Muir Snowfield to the 10,000’ elevation of Camp Muir, which will be the base camp for the next three nights. July 8th will be spent training on the Cowlitz Glacier adjacent to Camp Muir. Working on skills such as ice axe arrest, crampon techniques, and rope team travel, the team will prepare for the summit attempt. The ascent to the summit will begin in the darkness of the very early morning hours of July 9th. If all goes well with the team, route, and weather, the team should be standing on the summit crater rim by the time most folks are arriving at work in Seattle. Follow the team at CampPatriot.org, and help "Give Back to Those Who Have Given”. |
